Cricket 4

Cricket 4 and Cricket World XI was part of Channel 4’s mission to reinvent cricket and position Cricket4.com as one of the world's most popular cricket destinations.

Getfrank were commissioned by Zone for Channel 4 and briefed to find solutions that would drive traffic to the Cricket4 web site even when there is no television coverage. In addition, Getfrank were asked to create dynamic player and country ranking systems that would be made available to bolster television commentator’s statistical scope, in turn reinforcing the Cricket4 brand.

Solution

Getfrank were able to use their expertise in content, editorial and online brand development - drawing on wide experience of developing online management games and creating content destinations - to develop the game. Cricket 4 on television is one of the major success stories of Channel 4 Sport but this project represented a key exercise in convergence, selling both web and TV offerings as a whole and building on the experience Channel 4 enjoyed with Big Brother last summer. It represented Channel 4’s biggest spend on a web project since Big Brother.

"Channel 4 is committed to commissioning innovative and creative sports content, and our World XI management game and test cricket rankings embody that philosophy by linking two popular cricket ideas for the first time, and making them available to a new worldwide audience."
Richard Costobadie, Editor of www.cricket4.com

Outcome

Over 6000 cricket fans from over thirty different countries have registered within weeks of launch. The dynamic rankings have given Cricket 4 an edge on competitors by providing key information for news stories on completion of tests rather than months after as had traditionally been the case.
