Gorillaz

Getfrank won a three-way pitch for this prestigious, unique project, and worked with EMI, Parlophone and Zombie to create the online home for the cartoon band concept created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.

Emi needed a place where fans could get to know the virtual band. They approached Getfrank to help bring Gorillaz to life.

Solution

Getfrank created a virtual "space" on the web where the band would live but never be seen. Gorillaz’ studio is a wholly believable world rich in content and interactivity. Every element contributes to the fantasy. Getfrank developed functionality enabling users to explore the space, listen to and mix tracks, explore band member’s computers and bedrooms and even graffiti the walls.

Outcome

Gorillaz are a major phenomenon. Over two million copies of the album have been sold worldwide. Site usage is at two million unique users per month, decreasing only gradually in the intervening years. The site has won numerous awards, including four at the UK online music awards 2001. All the evidence points to successful development and portrayal of the band’s ethos online.
