Improvement and Development Agency

In January 2003, Getfrank were commissioned to develop web site templates and offline branding for the best practice site for local government: IDeA Knowledge. As the ethos behind the whole organisation is sharing knowledge and building an online community, it was key that the site demonstrated what is possible online, especially in terms of usability and accessibility. The current IDeA Knowledge site is the only government site to have attained RNIB’s "See it Right" accreditation for being accessible, so maintaining this level of accessibility was mandatory.

Embracing accessibility

Getfrank and accessibility partners Enable (UK) have embraced accessibility, and encouraged the client to increase the levels of accessibility of their site beyond minimum requirements - to ensure all users benefit from the site. We are currently working towards a site that will reach a minimum of conformance level Triple-A of the Web Accessibility Initiative – but which is also attractive to users who use graphical browsers. The offline branding reflects the focus on the site’s community and importance of sharing knowledge - with "30,000 heads being better than one" - and will ensure consistency across print and electronic media. Getfrank are lead agency on the project, managing user and accessibility testing and co-ordinating technical and print partners for a launch in May 2003.

Outcome

With membership reaching 100% of local governments and high expectations of the site within the sector, it was essential that the IDeA site was truly exemplary - IDeA are so pleased with the results so far that they are commissioning Getfrank to rewrite their accessibility guidelines and to review the broader IDeA brand.

"Re-designing a complex, established site like IDeA Knowledge was always going to be a tricky project, and we picked Getfrank because we thought they would handle our detailed requirements well and deliver. Their outstanding technical expertise and commitment to building a long-term strong relationship with us contributed to a positive and productive working experience. On the basis of the work done to date, we'd certainly expect to work with Getfrank again in the future."
